Therapeutic Approach

JP is a registered Clinical Psychologist practicing in Stellenbosch and Kenridge. His training at undergraduate level was at the University of Stellenbosch, after which he had some teaching experience in the UK and returned for further training and completion of his MA Clinical Psychology at the University of Pretoria. In 2012, JP completed a 3year course of The Psychoanalytic Treatment of Personality Disorders through the International Masterson Institute, New York, USA.

Psychoanalytic therapy aims to gain insight and understanding of our inner selves. It therefore focus on longer term change and not only short term relief. The Masterson Approach (developed over decades’ research of adolescents and adults by Dr James F Masterson) is a developmental, self and object relations understanding and treatment of individuals’ core relation struggles with themselves and others.

Therapy could therefore also be an opportunity to address a wide range of psychological difficulties which include:

  • depression
  • bipolar mood disorder
  • loss and bereavement
  • anxiety
  • anger
  • psychosomatic concerns
  • trauma
  • day to day stress
  • eating disorders
  • relationship difficulties
  • work difficulties
  • separation issues
  • loneliness
  • behavioural problems
  • addiction
  • sexuality issues
  • various forms of abuse
  • personal emotional growth and development, and so forth
